The purpose of education has been a subject of debate for many years. Many ideas and theories have been developed for this purpose. However, the purpose of this article is to focus on two specific approaches to education. The first is the approach of teaching how to think and the other is the approach of teaching what to think. In my opinion, education teaches people how to think rather than what to think because this approach increases awareness of questions, improves thinking skills, increases creativity and broadens the human point of view. Asking questions is the fundamental component of the approach of teaching how to think and significantly improves mental development. Oak states that education should allow people to question what they have learned and that the education system should be adapted for this purpose (2). Furthermore, questions lead to more questions and more answers to be found. This is a path of knowledge acquisition. If we look more closely, it can be seen that efforts in this path lead to mental development. As many philosophers have said, wisdom can only be achieved by asking questions. Even if we cannot answer all the questions we have asked, we still wonder about many things because in this sense the questions are more important than the answers. “If education is the process of acquiring knowledge, it can never truly end since knowledge is infinite and one can never claim to have acquired all of it.” (Oak, 1). It is wiser to let people think about why mistakes are wrong, instead of persuading them by giving them concrete scenarios to make them accept what is wrong. The approach of teaching how to think is much better than the approach of teaching what to think for the sake of questioning, thinking skills, creativity, and giving better perspective. People learn more and better as they question the information they learn. Thinking skills are influenced by the benefits of applying this approach to education as well. Creativity, the primary component of scientific and artistic development, is stimulated with the help of this approach. People's perspective is broadened and people gain deep understanding in this approach. Therefore, these ideas justify the idea of ​​teaching how to think better.
