Topic > Childhood Leukemia - 1080

It was difficult to decide on the topic of this article until a compelling, funny and heartwarming story came to light. On Friday, November 15, 2013, the entire city of San Francisco came together to grant a little boy his wish, according to the Associated Press in many national news outlets. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a “charitable organization founded in the United States that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy” (Wikipedia, 2013). This time the Foundation did itself by fulfilling 5-year-old Miles Scott's wish to transform the city of San Francisco, California into Gotham City for much of the day, to allow Miles, a leukemia survivor, to become " Batkid"! , (USA Today, 2013). This was no ordinary "dress up game" for the young leukemia survivor. This “fake” fantasy of the 5-year-old superhero lover reached from the president of the United States, Barak Obama, to the actors hired to play the repugnant Riddler and Joker. According to the press, the entire city participated so that Miles' wish was not only granted but also phenomenal. Batkid was first called into action by police chief Greg Suhr, later fighting crime with an adult Batman lookalike by saving a damsel in distress from the cable car tracks and defusing a bomb. The United States Attorney General, Melinda Haag, then informed Batkid that there was an "indictment" accusing the Riddler and Penguin of conspiracy and needed Batkid's help in bringing them to justice. Miles moved on to a bank robbery in progress during which he captured the Riddler. The mini superhero then had to save the San Francisco Giants' mascot, "Lou Seal" from... middle of paper..., touched so many people across the country that awareness of childhood leukemia definitely grew. Donations for research should also increase. This type of “make believe” also did something else; the wish brought many different people together, restoring faith in humanity for many people.
