The KNP is home to 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 bird species and 147 mammal species and has a rich history and many archaeological sites. In 1898 the KNP was established to protect the animals of the Lowveld. In 1902, when the Boer War ended and the British were victorious, they commissioned James Stevenson-Hamilton to protect the animals from hunters, poachers and cattle ranchers. In 1927 the KNP opened for the first time and only 3 cars entered. Since the 1950s research unit was staffed with different types of scientists, the KNP has been run a little differently. Transportation: Plane, shuttle bus, car rental, coach, organized tours are the different types of transportation you can use. You can fly to Skukuza Airport with KNP or KMIA, cars can also be rented from the airport. You can then drive yourself to the various rest camps and along the way you can enjoy the most magnificent wildlife sightings Accommodation: The different camps in the KNP - Berg-en-dal: Berg-en-dal has chalets but it's not like the traditional rondavels; these chalets are square and have a paved braai area. They have three large shaded camping areas but the camping area has no grass. To get the best seat you must claim your seat in advance.
