Pattern Long ago, when literature began, humans carved stones and rocks to create images that explained stories. One of the most historic and recognized written works of art is The Epic of Gilgamesh. It all began in the Middle East (now Iraq). Some believe that Gilgamesh was a real man, while others saw him only as a fictional character. Royal or not, he is shown to be a well-known king in literature. This heroic king created walls to protect and surround his city of Uruk. Although he was not the kindest to his people, Gilgamesh was a good role model in the urban culture of Uruk due to his competitiveness, ambitions, and leadership. As a ruler, Gilgamesh was not on the best behavior. He pushed the citizens of his city around, made love to all the women he wanted, and robbed his people. Many may not like him for his actions, but on the bright side, if you look at American society today, tragedies and crimes like this still occur.
