Topic > The Importance of CPT Codes - 1280

There are three main sets of codes in coding: ICD-9-CM, CPT, and HCPCS. As a programmer it is important to be able to use them all. The better acquainted a programmer is with all these manuals, the more accurate and efficient he will be able to be. Being able to use manuals starts with knowing the difference between them. “The International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification or ICD-9-CM is based on the Ninth Revision, International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization. ICD-9-CM is the system for coding hospital-related diagnoses and procedures used in the United States” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). The International Classification of Diseases coding is a classification system that organizes diseases and injuries into groups according to established criteria. ICD-9 codes are numeric and have three, four, or five digits (“5 Carefully Explain,” 2014). Current Procedural Terminology codes otherwise known as CPT codes are a classification of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed by physicians and other healthcare professionals.” Each procedure is assigned a 5-digit code (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). “CPT codes are numbers assigned to every procedure and service a medical professional may provide to a patient. These include medical, surgical, and diagnostic services” (“5 Carefully Explain,” 2014). They are then used by insurers to determine the amount of reimbursement a doctor will receive from the insurer. Because they all use the same codes to mean the same thing, they ensure uniformity (“5 carefully explain,” 2014). “HCPCS stands for Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System. HCPCS codes are known as ...... half of the card ...... urated coding follows the sorting directions. Know the meaning of different terms, for example includes notes, and see also. It is essential to follow the instructions that tell you to check the fourth and fifth digits. If I put in the time, study, and practice, I believe I will be a very efficient and accurate programmer. The field of medical billing offers many opportunities not only for work, but for lifelong learning and a lifelong career (“Medical Billing and” 2012). As long as medical practices have patients, they will need some types of medical coding specialists. Attending Bryant and Stratton College will give me the best education and allow me to jump straight into this field. Accuracy is a key factor in the coding process. You may not use all manuals, depending on the setting of your job, but knowing how to use them will be extremely helpful when you enter the job market.
