In today's educational environment, all students expect to receive the same level of education from schools, and all students are expected to meet the same standards. Expectations for students with learning disabilities are the same as for students without learning disabilities. Today it is unacceptable for schools or teachers to expect less from a segment of students because they have physical disabilities, learning difficulties, disciplinary problems or come from poor backgrounds. Standardization of testing has resulted in each student counting as much as their peers, and the most positive impact has been seen with the lowest ability students. Schools have developed new approaches to reaching these previously disadvantaged students while maintaining positive scores for the entire student body. To ensure academic success, teachers use a multi-strategy approach to develop students with diverse abilities and backgrounds. Each student is different in the skills and experiences they bring to the classroom; their personalities, backgrounds, and interests are as varied as the ways teachers may choose to educate them. Differentiated instruction has proven to be an effective method by which teachers can engage students from diverse backgrounds and achieve whole-class success. When using differentiated instruction, teachers develop lesson strategies for each student or groups of students that provide different learning paths but all paths achieve the same learning goal.
