Summary: Desktop virtualization allows IT services to provide access to an entire information system environment to a remote device. For example, the desktop of a traditional computer can be virtualized so that all programs, applications and data are stored on a server and users can access their "desktop" on any number of devices, including smartphones or thin client (IT Services, 2014). This technology promises to reduce support and hardware costs, reduce power consumption, and increase security and manageability. Description of different virtualization technologies: Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI): VDI is currently the most popular type of desktop virtualization. It allows users to access dedicated virtual machines (VMs) hosted on servers such as Hyper-V boxes, ESX boxes, XenServer boxes, etc. (Khnaser, 2011). VDI is also known as server-hosted virtual desktops and is based on virtual machines that reside on servers. It follows a server-based computing model. VDI takes the user's operating environment (operating system, application files, and data) and recreates it in an environment hosted on a remote system, classically a virtual machine. The user can then access this environment remotely from their computer and all processing related to the environment takes place on the remote virtual machine. Some of the benefits of using this technology are listed and described below: Centralized Management and Improved Security: The Company will be able to manage hundreds of computers spread across the premises or even in a specific geographic location. All these desktops can be managed in one central location. Users will connect to the same central location for ...... middle of paper ......ications that conflict with other apps on your computer. Streaming: Streaming makes use of a single image file that is streamed over a network to end users' computers. In this type of virtualization, end users may no longer need a local hard drive. The only thing the user will need is some memory and a CPU to run the operating system or streaming application. Other platforms such as VDI and application virtualization have already applied streaming, so this can be taken as part of those positions. Conclusion: Desktop virtualization supports the development of scalability and resource utilization. The main advantage of choosing the best desktop virtualization technology benefits the organization through ease of management and centralization of administrative tasks. This report introduced what desktop virtualization is and their types along with reasons to choose one over another.
