Throughout the novel “Of Mice and Men” the author, John Steinbeck, alludes to the impossibility of the American dream through the unfinished dreams of most of the characters such as George, Lennie, Curley, Candy and Crooks' wife. Along with the broken dreams, there are many obstacles that may prevent the dream from coming true and many foreshadowings that there will not be a happy ending for the characters. Even though Crooks never mentioned his dream, he held onto the possibility of helping George and Lennie once Lennie shares the dream with Crooks while also mentioning that Candy is helping them, and you see it when Crooks says, "...If you ...you guys wanted a hand to work for free, just for his maintenance, why would I come to lend?" a hand.
