--What is perfect? The spear bearer is. -- Well, the ancient Greeks thought the human body was whole. For them, it was not the individual who was flawless; it was the almost mathematical precision where the proportions of each part of the body were perfect in relation to the others; the artist decided to demonstrate precisely this. The Doryphoros, another name for the work, was created by the innovative Greek sculptor Polykleitos, around 450-440 BC. Thus the original bronze casting was lost, Roman marble copies still remain. The strong Hellenic identity and the idealized mentality of the period pushed the artist to create such a testimony of mankind; one of the greatest examples of classical Greek art. Doryphoros means spear bearer, the name originates because the sculpture would originally have held a bronze spear. Nowadays, the preferred name is Doryphoros of Polykleitos.
