A feeling of desolation and emptiness overwhelmed me as I stood outside the pathologist's room. The doctor had just announced the diagnosis of my father's illness: advanced stage liver cirrhosis. This terrible disease caused him a permanent disability, which changed my life in many ways. My parents' attitude towards illness taught me to persevere in the face of difficulties while maintaining determination and also taught me the value of community. Family hardships shaped my approach to adversity and helped me quickly mature to take on responsibilities as a leader. My father bravely fought the disease, while my mother faced financial difficulties. I did most of the housework and took on a lot of responsibilities, as well as some part-time jobs. My parents' love and support for me has never changed, even though their lives are filled with untold amounts of stress. My education and growth continue to be their top priority.
