The methodology of participant observation allows us to understand the importance of particular cultural aspects through the material context, the social context and the emic and etic ideational perspectives, which exist in our daily cultural activities. February 26, 2014 I participated in a cultural activity playing soccer on an indoor field, in the gymnasium of the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia. I observed that the material setting of the institution was structured in terms of cultural activities, in this case sporting activities that took place within it. The soccer field was located in the center of the gymnasium, with drawn curtains and defined parallel lines surrounding the edges, demarcating the playing area. The restricted area emphasized the exercise of control within the material context. Additionally, there were nets at each end of the pitch which created a clear goal, allowing players to score goals within a limited amount of time.
