Kennings is one of the most used tools. It serves to constantly remind readers and the speaker of the characterization of each character within the poems. Line 432, "shepherd of evil, guardian of crime", and line 483, "that sin-stained demon", refer to Grendel who constantly reminds readers that Grendel is considered the antagonist. Line 472 refers to Beowulf as "the mighty protector of men". Another literary device used within the poem is alliteration. This device was subtler than Kenning's because it can be easily overlooked. The purpose of alliteration was to enhance the description of a particular character's actions or appearances; for example: "He slipped through the door, and there, in the silence, he seized thirty men and crushed them..."
