The ethical treatment and testing of animals is a widely controversial topic in the field of zoology. Opinions on animal testing range from positive to outright negativity. Animals such as mice and rats have been found to have psychological and genetic similarities that relate to humans making them perfect for experimental testing. Before various products are brought to market for human consumption, animals are the most common way for companies to test whether their new inventions work. The benefits and improvements to modern medicine resulting from animal testing should be carefully weighed against the harmful and toxic ingredients used in such experiments and their harmful effects on test subjects such as rats and mice. An important thing to remember in animal testing is that "most testing has nothing to do with disease research..., it's product testing" (Medical News Online). The Nobel Prizes in medicine have awarded seventy-one scientists who have carried out research on animals in the last 103 years (Pro-Test). Animals have great value in the product testing stages prior to product sales and distribution. In particular, medicine can benefit from it because animals are similar to humans in physiological and genetic terms (Hopes). Knowledge for present and future animal testing comes from information obtained in animal testing. Most prevention, cure or remedy for suffering diseases or ailments can be tested on animals first and then can be transferred to human use. For example, chemotherapy drugs could first be tested on animals to see if they might actually work on cancer patients. Or dialysis patients who may be suffering from kidney failure could receive a new medicine that is guaranteed to be effective because it was… middle of paper… a lot of thoughts on this topic. Furthermore, on the other hand, the effects are very devastating when the harm done can be greater than the benefits. Works Cited “11 Facts About Animal Testing.” Do something.
