The functions of code-switching in the English language Teaching classroom speech by preschool teachers in five elementary schools in a Santa Claus education district Lucia.IntroductionThe English language The teacher is still the main person in the classroom from whom students draw many of their linguistic experiences. Therefore, teachers must remain vigilant in how they use language. Bilingual teachers may often choose to alternate languages for particular reasons or do so unconsciously. There are teachers who believe that code-switching should be avoided in English language teaching, while others perceive code-switching as a useful teaching strategy for understanding components of the target language which is sometimes English. Regardless of teachers' opinions on which aspect should be favored, it is crucial to study the reasons that influence code-switching by teachers in English language learning classrooms. This will help other educators better decide whether to include or exclude code-switching in the language teaching process. Context of the Study Saint Lucia is a bilingual nation where Santa Lucian English and a French lexified creole (Kweyol) are widely spoken in similar domains. Contrary to English being the official language in Saint Lucia and the discussion of whether the language situation is still diglossic, schools predominantly recognize the use of both languages by teachers and students in formal classroom discourse. Population and sample The research population comprises nineteen pre-school teachers, all female from ten primary schools in Educational District 6 of Saint Lucia. The five teachers and their schools selected for this investigation will be selected deliberately, i.e. after permission to implement the research will have been granted, based on the teacher's proficiency in speaking both Kweyol and English and the close proximity to the researcher's ability to conduct the research all proficient bilingual speakers, the researcher will allow the principal to select the teacher for the survey.
