George Herbert Mead's theory of pragmatism operates on the proposition that there is no fundamental truth intrinsic to reality for society as a whole. Pragmatism primarily investigates that reality is based on an individual's interactions with the world around him and therefore reality and truth are encapsulated in the mind of the individual. “If something is not recognized as true, then it does not function as true in the community.” As such, pragmatism is a never-ending process for the individual throughout their life cycle. Conscience and consensus develop gradually allowing you to discern yourself, your values, morals and ethics, your truth. Ideologies and objects are negotiated within the self through perceptual and social interaction. Therefore, a black individual observes how those around them socially interact with them. Due to an objective and visible difference in skin tone, subjectivity is formed. Unfortunately, this subjectivity can be a cold and difficult cage to grow in for anyone outside the norm. This white mirror reflects a distorted image of oneself. As the bourgeoisie is built on a predominantly Anglo-Saxon heritage, there is little room for differentiation without some sort of oppression. Pragmatism insists that the good of the majority and the general public is primary for the truth of society, while other variables are marginalized. Observing an individual of another race produces responses based on the objective information available. This is Mead's symbolic interaction in action in response to race and ethnicity. Symbolically, this differentiation is inherently an oddity. How does society interact with a quirk in general, and how does that quirk interact with a society that has difficulty bending them... middle of paper... ugh new types of social interaction, contributions that enrich society and contribute to the process democratic. Of course this is an idealistic discussion; however, DuBois himself was disheartened by the lack of change within the company. As it turns out, the exploitative nature of capitalism is not a broken system. It is a system purpose-built to work the oppressive way it does. He is pragmatic and uses oppression against ethnic groups as a tool for his vitality. The degradation and denigration of minorities through “agreed lies” for capitalist gain and white prosperity are learned through symbolic interaction and role-taking. The key to changing this circumstance is to alter the grand narrative and identify the multiplicity of cultures within society: representation and formulation of history as a moral guide for future generations.
