The weather can affect agriculture in many, many different ways. From tornadoes, to tsunamis, to floods, any type of weather can and will affect agriculture. When agriculture is affected by weather conditions, not only are crops affected, but so are the people who grow and consume them. If you think about it, that's pretty much everyone. So regardless of severe weather, everyone will be affected in some way. Hurricanes, also known as tropical cyclones, are tropical storms that can last two or more weeks. They range from a category one to a category five hurricane. During a category one hurricane there are winds of seventy-four to ninety-five miles per hour. A category five hurricane brings winds reaching one hundred and fifty-five miles per hour or more. Hurricane damage can result from flooding, storm surge, or even winds. The damage ranges from the uprooting of trees to the creation of structural damage. Hurricanes can also bring down power lines causing loss of electricity and telephone service. Hurricane winds have the potential to toss cars if they are strong enough. Some warning signs of a hurricane are that waves will start to hit the shore every nine seconds, but as the hurricane gets closer, the waves start to hit the shore more often. Barometric pressure drops before a hurricane and winds begin to increase. There will also be a lot of rain. In the year 1989, there was a hurricane called Hurricane Hugo, which was a category four hurricane. It started in the North Atlantic Ocean, then hit South Carolina as a Category Four hurricane. This hurricane caused eighty-two deaths and $17.4 billion in damage. Winds have picked up to a hundred and three...... middle of paper...... agriculture can be affected by various weather conditions. This could include sweeping away agricultural machinery, drowning plants and livestock. When agriculture is affected, not only farmers are affected, but virtually everyone, because everyone relies on agriculture to survive.
