On July 18, 1984, one of America's most horrific and shocking murders took place in San Ysidro, California. An Ohio man committed the fourth deadliest single-perpetrator massacre in U.S. history, killing twenty-one people and wounding nineteen others. The "McDonald's Massacre," as it came to be known, was a tragic event that occurred at a McDonald's in San Ysidro. James Oliver Huberty was born on October 11, 1942, in the large city of Canton, Ohio. In the third year of his life James contracted polio and gradually recovered, leaving him with permanent walking difficulties. In the 1950s, James' father purchased a farm in Pennsylvania. James' mother refused to move to an Amish area and then left her family; following a Southern Baptist organization as a sidewalk preacher. After James' mother left, he retreated. In 1962, at a Jesuit Community College, James graduated with a degree in sociology. James later obtained his embalming license from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. James ended up marrying a woman named Etna in 1965 who he met at school. They had two children together; Zelia and Cassandra. James began working at a funeral home in the town of Massillon, Ohio, where he and his family had moved. The family was forced to move soon after, in 1971, when their home in Massillon burned down. This event also left him without a job due to the move. James found work in Canton, Ohio, where the family moved in 1971. James found work as a welder for Union Metal Inc. The Huberty family was full of violence. Once, at a birthday party, Etna told her daughter Zelia to attack a girl. The girl's mother confronted Etna at which point Etna threatened her with a 9mm pistol. The police were called and Etna Huberty was placed in the middle of a sheet of paper. This event was tragic and left the world shocked that someone could just walk into a restaurant and start shooting. Known as “The McDonald's Massacre,” this horrific shooting claimed the lives of twenty-one innocent people and took the father from his two daughters. That day will always be remembered as one of the deadliest in US history. James Huberty will always be remembered as the one who did it. Works Cited1. Schecher, Harold.
