Topic > Russian Reds and Hells Angels: Stopping Crime

Introduction From drug dealing to high-tech cybercrime, international organized crime is unique to each organization and each fraction of the organization. Despite the wide range of histories, structures and activities, overlaps occur and are always seen in the lack of efforts to stop organized criminal groups. At the local level, authorities have tried to stop the expansion of organized crime. However, internationally, little is being done to prevent, stop and bring justice to criminals. Origins of the Hells Angels Founded in the late 1940s under the name "Pissed Off Bastards of Bloomington" in California, later called the Hells Angels, they were a club of motorcycle enthusiasts with a passion for Harley-Davidsons. They caused trouble and liked to party, but the current Hells Angels were a ragtag bunch of individuals. In 1977, the Hells Angels saw potential in drug trafficking and absorbed the Montreal Popeyes motorcycle gang; thus creating the first chapter of the Hells Angels in Canada. Before constitutional rights, policemen, for example in Montreal, humiliated members of motorcycle gangs by tearing patches off jackets and ritual beatings; now, law enforcement has a more humanistic approach towards motorcycle gangs. Twenty years later, the Hells Angels have grown in size and expanded along the West Coast of North America, Australia, Germany and Great Britain becoming a franchise organization. After taking the Port of Montreal, the Hells Angels strategically decided to take control of the Port of Vancouver on the other side of the country. While the Montreal section committed violence to achieve positive results, the Vancouver section used diplomacy to achieve the desired results. Now the Hells Angels are around... middle of paper... these international criminal groups? The answer is simple, we all are. Every nation, every government, every company and every person is responsible for taking action against organized crime – we are all affected to some extent and need to make our thoughts known. Insurance rates, credit ratings, and many other aspects of the average person's life are affected in some way by crimes committed by international organized crime groups. As similar and different as each group is, so are their crimes. It's time to take a stand against organized crime. Works Cited Granville, J. (2003).
