Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she was raised there for a short period of time, then moved to Stamps, Arkansas. In Arkansas she suffered racial discrimination, but remained true to her roots. During her childhood in Arkansas, she experienced a tragic event: at the age of seven she was raped by her mother's boyfriend. His uncles discovered the crime and killed the man.
