I was very disappointed in myself after receiving the dismissal letter from the state university. I felt that I had let down not only myself, but also my family who was hoping for me to earn a degree from a great school like Ohio State. There were several reasons that led me to struggle and lose concentration in my studies. During my time studying at Ohio State, my older sister who I lived with received the bad news that she had lost her teaching assistant job at Ohio State. She was the only one who helped support me at that time. My sister was the one who paid the rent and most of the bills. I helped her pay some bills and groceries since I only worked minimal part time. Since my sister was unable to continue her teaching job at that time, I help pay most of the bills, including rent. I certainly hadn't prepared for the situation and ended up having to start working more so I could help my sister pay the bills. At the same time, my mother who lives in Thailand also suffered from breast cancer which cost my parents a lot of money for surgery and medical expenses. My parents were unable to help me or my sister with the costs and expenses of living here in the United States. Since my sister only had a student visa and was not a U.S. citizen, I was the only one who could work legally and pay most of the rent and other bills. Working long hours affected me mentally and emotionally. I lose both free time and study time. Because I didn't plan for the situation, including poor time management, I ended up working harder and spending less time studying than I should have. I know I struggled to keep up with classes and missed a lot of classes. I didn't think it through and thought I could handle the situation on my own. I didn't let anyone know about my situation or ask any instructor or counselor for help. I ultimately performed poorly academically and received bad grades which led to academic dismissal. I regret it and only wish I could have made a better decision. After I was let go from Ohio State, I continued working all summer. My sister later got her teaching assistant job back and was able to continue her studies at Ohio State.
