Society The novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding is about a group of boys involved in a plane crash in the 1940s during a nuclear war. The plane is shot down and lands on a tropical island. Some kids try to function as a whole group, but over time they see obstacles. The novel talks about civilization and social order. There are three older boys, Ralph, Jack and Piggy, who have an effect on the group of younger boys. The main character Ralph, changes throughout the novel due to his role of leadership and responsibility, which transforms him into a more severe but caring character as the group becomes more uncivilized and savage. At the beginning of the story, after the plane has crashed on the island and the boys are settled, Ralph feels very free and absent.
