Duke (2008/2009) explains two forms of graphic summaries. One, visual representation which ties into the old saying “pictures are worth a thousand words” and as far as comprehension goes, this visualization helps the reader organize information into a visual form to remember the information presented in a text. Another form of graphical synthesis is a semantic map. A semantic map allows the reader to represent information from a text in a web format. Actively transforming information from memory into a semantic map helps improve understanding (Duke, 2008/2009). Freeze image in three steps. A strategy of visualizing what a text communicates helps the reader understand the text. One visualization strategy described by Mills (2009) is Three-Step Freeze Frames. This strategy is performed during and after reading to improve reading comprehension. Students work in groups to develop three action shots of what they read and then convey it in dramatic motion without using words (Mills, 2009).
