It had a profound impact because those accused by the Chinese Communist Party or the Red Guards were often sent to a labor camp to be reformed and were often never heard from again. This frightened people in China because many of them did not want to be seen or heard of opposing the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, the Chinese Communist Party, or Mao Zedong. This is why the fear of being labeled a counterrevolutionary was terrifying for many ordinary Chinese citizens. That's why people like Mao Bo who were affected by the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution because they were disillusioned with the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution and were accused of being a counter-revolutionary and were sent to prison simply for thinking differently and not driving the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution
