#1. Are the people of Nut Island a cohesive team? The Nut Island team had the potential to accomplish great things. They were a very cohesive team. Cohesion refers to the degree to which members are attracted and motivated to remain part of that team. A cohesive group member values their membership and strives to maintain a positive relationship within the group. Every person who worked at Nut Island wanted to be there and wouldn't let anything get in the way of their team. If you were just looking at team cohesion, Nut Island would be a good example. They worked together and enjoyed what they did at the sewage treatment plant. Employees worked overtime without pay and without complaining. They used everyone's skills to take care of the plant facility and equipment.#2. Is Nut Island an example of a successful team? Explain (a) why or why not and (b) the role team cohesion plays. (a.) They should be considered the members of a good team. First, a high-performance team must have strong core values to drive attitudes and behaviors consistent with the team's purpose. Members should know why the team was created and why he or she is part of the team. Second, a team should have specific performance goals. Members should know exactly what they are trying to accomplish. This also includes setting standards for measuring results and ways to obtain feedback on performance. A good team will make members understand the importance of collective efforts. Third, a high-performing team has the right mix of skills. These include technical, interpersonal, decision-making and problem-solving skills. No one person needs to know how to do everything, but every member should be able to contribute to the group.......middle of paper...if it becomes too insular, a manager may try to decrease cohesiveness. The group needs to be shaken up and changes need to be made. A manager can initiate a disagreement between members. A highly cohesive group will always avoid conflict. Some sort of difference between group members might allow them to realize that they are not doing the right thing. A manager has the ability to replace group members and change the size of a group. A new person with new ideas could prevent groupthink from occurring. A manager should make sure that members focus on the right opponent. On Nut Island, group members felt isolated from management. They were focusing on the wrong opponent. This completely changed their goals and objectives and they no longer cared about keeping the port clean. Ultimately, the team had to be disbanded when the wastewater treatment was moved to another plant.
