The White Savior Complex is a harmful subconscious substratum of the Hollywood system and, more generally, of all Western society. It is used to further separate the notions of “us” and “other” creating a solid separation fueled by hypocrisy and a sense of entitlement. Hollywood attempts to address race relations, but fails due to this trope. Kingsle, from the article "Does My Hero Look White in This?" they described that both racism and colonialism are recognized, but not without reassuring that not only were white people against the system of racist power dynamics, but they were also actively fighting against it in leadership roles (2013). In the rest of my essay I will comment on many modern films and their use of this trope, and why adhering to this cinematic strategy is problematic. The White Savior Complex is a trope in which a normal ethnically European character meets a disadvantaged non-European. character. Feeling compassion for the plight of the other characters, the White Savior “selflessly” volunteers as their guardian, mentor, or caretaker, to help them overcome their predisposition (White Mans Burden, 2004). The White Savior, at its core, is the application of colonialized ideals, deeming people of color incompetent and hopeless, until the White Savior comes to save them (White Mans Burden, 2004). A common destructive trait of this trope involves whites conquering non-whites and eliminating their culture in the name of 4helping them (White Mans Burden, 2004). The conception of this trope took place in 18th and 19th century adventure novels. During the period of European exploration, the trope modernized and became problematically common (King...... center of card ...... help. The Blindside had similar characteristics to white privilege, the Sandra Bullock's character being stubborn, passionate, capable and effective while Michael Oher was perceived as emotionally stunted and unable to help himself, as we have seen, the White Savior syndrome has a tendency to make people of color lack the ability to seek change and to erase themselves. their historical agency (Cammarota, 2011). Any progress or success comes from the help of a white individual, which suggests that the escape from poverty, or ignorance, is thanks to the intelligence of the Savior. White Freire calls this “False Generosity” (1998 ) a white person may provide help to a person of color, but the help comes in the form of savings, the emphasis on savings rather than transformation fails to recognize the oppressive structure. and, in turn, maintains white supremacy. (Cammarota, 2011).
