When an environmental disaster occurs, such as a massive ocean oil spill, one should consider whether the company and government employees responsible for making the decisions acted correctly and therefore the disaster could not have been avoided. “The Deepwater Horizon disaster has [been] confirmed as the largest accidental release of oil into the oceans ever” (Black, 2010, para. 1). This issue has been controversial and much debated in recent years; however, there was not much discussion about the company's ethical values and behavior. The government should take action against BP and its executives because the company is acting unethically by trying to avoid its responsibilities and the consequences of the disaster. It is illegal to earn as much money as possible in a business without concern for the environment. Furthermore, BP did not live up to its announced ethical values and its CEO acted unethically. BP is acting unethically by trying to escape its responsibility and the consequences of the disaster. The arguments heard by the company to explain the possible causes of the oil rig explosion are very different from those that correspond to most trusted people such as members of Congress or researchers. Transocean and BP carried out investigations to determine the cause of the explosion. Transocean CEO Steve Newman said the explosion occurred due to a failure of the shell and/or concrete and added that without the failure of one of these elements, the explosion could not have occurred. occur. Both investigated the type of cement used in the well, and BP investigators concluded that the problem was the foamed nitrogen cement that had been used, but instead of taking…half of paper…it was worth about $118,000. in costs.Works CitedBlack, R.
