Topic > Difference between a leader and a manager - 1239

IntroductionAccording to Muenjohn, Boucher and Tran 2010, "Leadership is the ability to inspire trust and support among people who needed to achieve organizational goals." In this module we learn the differences between what makes a leader and a manager. And the purpose of this assessment is to reflect on another leader's analysis for the improvement of my leadership by applying the relevant theories and concepts learned in this module. Task One: Observation The person I chose to do this report on is a leader in a volunteer organization I worked with. Her name is Darryl Loh, 29 years old, she recently became a mother of a son and as far as I know she has done a lot of volunteer/community work since 2001 as an intern at City Harvest Community Services Association and eventually became a staffer since 2002 until now. He recently took part in a large-scale corporate social responsibility project organized by CapitaLand, LEGO Singapore and Mediacorp's "We Are One" on November 7 at ION Orchard. It was through this volunteer project that we worked together, even though I have known her for about two years. “The City Harvest Community Services Association (CHCSA) was founded in March 1996. CHCSA passionately believes in a culture of loving others fervently. With this, as of August 31, 2008, we have a dedicated team of 8 full-time employees and 784 volunteers working to realize the vision of making a difference in our society. In 2008 alone, CHCSA provided 22,996 services to 14,276 individuals." (Taken from the CHCSA website) The Association provides services to: elderly, children, intellectually disabled, deaf, terminally ill, patients with multiple sclerosis, family members , The Yo...... middle of paper ......an Ye Peng who is the founder of CityCare organization, a non-profit organization that believes in synergistic collaboration between businesses, community groups and individuals who influence a positive transformation in society.' (Taken from the CityCare website) Finally, Darryl shares the two obstacles he faced while leading his team; (1) When ego or selfishness gets in the way, sometimes when people are in power, it's easy to abuse it; A good leader must always keep himself in check, with the aim of leading the team, not for his own benefit but for the benefit of the group. And (2) when you have not earned the right to lead, I believe leaders must earn it too the right to lead, especially by gaining the respect and love of the team. Without members believing in the vision and respecting the leader's behavior or style, it is very difficult for them to follow you.
