Fossil fuels are an important part of the world and our daily lives. Oil is a fossil fuel that, like all fossil fuels, is available in limited supply, but is one of the best ways to produce profitable energy. There are some alternative energy sources such as nuclear that could be a way to obtain energy in the future. Oil is a liquid fossil fuel that can be thin like gasoline or thick like tar. Oil is made up of hydrocarbons; with the addition of other substances mainly sulphur. Oil can be green, black or even transparent. Oil is highly combustible (Petroleum.uk.com 2013, October 21). When oil rigs find an oil well, they usually do a test drill, but it's expensive, so they have better ratings. Most oil wells have more than one borehole, some are used to pump oil and others pump water, other chemicals and pressurized steam into the well. For offshore drilling riggers must first find out if there is oil beneath the seabed and to do this they use a method called Gravity Meter. Oil drilling relies on an oil rig which is a mobile, self-powered conglomerate of tools used for drilling (Williams, J 1996-2011). During World War II the price of oil was $28.52 a barrel, but it rose to $97.80 a barrel. barrel of oil today and the one-year projection for a barrel of oil is $112 per hour (Oil Price.net. 2013, Oct. 23). Oil prices peak every 32.2 months (Williams, J 1996-2011) The primary use of oil is gasoline and 45% of all oil is used to produce gasoline. Some other uses of oil are the production of fuels such as diesel fuel and jet fuel. They use oil to produce most fuels because it is the cheapest and contains the most energy.
