Arabia and metamorphosis Nowadays, instead of knowing whether an action is right, individuals act based on the circumstances they believe are right. In short stories, James Joyce writes about a little boy in "Araby" and Franz Kafka writes about Gregor Samsa in "Metamorphoses." Both characters face internal and external problems throughout these stories, while also sharing similarities and differences. The boy falls in love with his friend's sister Mangan, who makes his life an illusion as she is the person he is involved with. Gregor Samsa turns into a huge insect, which makes it difficult for him to cope with his normal family. Unfortunately, the things these characters believe will happen next have gone in the opposite direction. This results in their downfall, as both characters fail suffering isolation and alienation. The boy is isolated from reality and is alienated from his hometown. Gregor Samsa is isolated from himself because he doesn't know what to do since he is an insect and creates it to be alienated from his family. The boy and Gregor Samsa are both trying to find a way out of the isolation and alienation they face, trying to discover who they really are before all these changes come to them. "Araby" by James Joyce, do not identify the protagonist with a name. This shows that the boy has no idea who he is and causes him to isolate himself to find out who he is. This story begins with a description of the setting with an atmosphere of loneliness and darkness “An uninhabited house of two people the floors stood at the blind end… the other houses of the street, aware of a dignified life within them, they looked at each other with unperturbed brown faces” (107). of paper……rth” (Kafka 147). Gregor's death depicts his failure, dying alone in his room. He was isolated from his normal life and alienated from his family, which created him to have no one to be with as he died with nothing left to live for. In conclusion, the boy and Gregor Samsa wanted happiness in their life, but in the end the opposite happened. The paths that these characters wanted to follow lasted only for a certain time. The boy managed to talk to Mangan's sister but in the end it was just a lesson learned by going to Arabia. Gregor Samsa was able to cooperate with his family like an insect, but this only lasted for a while until he became a burden on his family. It shows that these characters were isolated from what they were in the mind and then alienated from who they wanted to please most, as in the case of Mangn's sister and Gregor's family..
