This essay focuses on the theme of forbidden love, The God of Small Things written by Arundhati Roy. This novel explores love and how love cannot be ignored in the face of social boundaries. The novel examines how conventional society tries to destroy true love as this novel is constantly connected to loss, death and sadness. This essay will explore the theme of forbidden love by discussing and analyzing Ammu and Velutha's love which is forbidden due to the "Love Laws" in relation to the caste system which leads to Velutha's death. It is evident that forbidden love has a negative impact and influences other characters, such as Estha and Rahel, which results in the incestuous encounter between Estha and Rahel. The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy tells the story of the communist state of Kerala and the forbidden love between two castes, which changes everyone's life. In the novel An "Untouchable", Velutha is a carpenter and works at Paradise Pickles and Preserves for much less than he deserves due to his Untouchable status in the caste system. Velutha falls into forbidden love with a divorced woman, Ammu, associated with an upper-caste Syrian Christian Ipe family. Marriage was the only way Ammu could escape this life, but she missed the chance by marrying the wrong man, as he was an alcoholic and this led to divorce. Ammu breaks the laws that dictate "who should be loved, how and how much", as their relationship threatens the "caste system" in India, which is a hierarchical structure and social practice in India where one's position in society is determined and it cannot be changed. Arhundati Roy portrays the theme of forbidden love within the caste system and shows how they are... at the center of the card... therefore they find pleasure and fulfillment in each other because of the pain they both share. This therefore shows that in a country like India, where social status and prosperity are crucial, it is evident that love takes precedence over everything, despite Indian norms, love will always be a priority. So we see that not only did Ammu and Velutha break the "Laws of Love", but Estha and Rahel also broke the "Laws of Love" when they slept together. As a result of the affair between Velutha and Ammu, Velutha was later murdered by the police on false charges. Baby Kochamma also experiences the theme of forbidden love, as she wants to believe that she chose not to accept Father Mulligan's love, the one thing she wanted more than anything. Ammu and Velthu's forbidden love is shameful for her, because it could be because they have what she cannot have..
