From his family heritage, Bilbo's mother was on the Took side, known for being adventurous and mischievous. On the other hand, Bilbo's father was a Baggins, very prudent, cautious and lazy. Bilbo, being a man of controversial blood, vacillates between his Tookish side and Baggins' side throughout his journey; whether to be a brave hero or stand aside and watch from a safe corner. At first, Bilbo starts out as Baggins; during the Call to Adventure, Bilbo states, “I should think so – around here! We are simple and calm people and we are not interested in adventures. Uncomfortable and disturbing things! I'll make you late for dinner!" (6) when Gandalf (the herald and mentor) stated that he was looking for someone to share an adventure with. This clearly shows Bilbo's prudent, cautious and lazy side as he did not prefer to disturb his comfortable and relaxed agenda in his small and safe hobbit hole. Additionally, throughout the first half of the journey, Bilbo's character was always on Baggins' side, constantly reminding himself of the comforts of his home when encountering various struggles and conflicts. An example of this is: “'Don't worry about thefts and everything that has to do with them! I wish I were at home, in my nice little hole by the fire, with the kettle just starting to sing!' It wasn't the last time he wished for it!” (31). The decisive turning point for this Baggins
