“Reality television is a genre of television programming that documents unscripted situations and real events, and often features a previously unknown cast” (Wikipedia, 2014). When someone thinks of reality TV, they often associate it with documenting someone's life, game shows, and cooking shows, which repeatedly result in one person or team winning and leaving everyone else with nothing, or fame and fortune. The American reality show Survivor selects a series of contestants divided into tribes. Once in their tribes, they are deprived of basic human rights such as shelter, food, water and fire. To satisfy these basic needs, contestants must compete in challenges where the winning team will receive these items or in most cases immunity. Being filmed continuously with no choice as to when, where and what is shown on national and international television violates contestants' privacy. Directly linked to 1984 is the invasion of privacy of Survivor contestants and the citizens of Oceania. Like the residents of 1984, the Survivor contestants are well aware that they are being filmed and recorded by the cameras and microphones of the film and sound crew, and they have a say in when they will be recorded and what will be produced and shown on both. on national and international television screens, thus creating an interference with knowledge and violation of the privacy of competitors. The citizens of 1984 know that their every move can be watched and every noise they make can be heard. How do they know? Orwell writes: “It was one of those images so artificial that your eyes follow you when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption well...... in the center of the paper ...... quantity of food and basic human needs that they will have to satisfy, as well as no control over when they will receive the items. Due to this totalitarian society in both 1984 and Survivor, contestants and citizens can become hungry, dehydrated, and deprived of basic human needs. Just another example of why the reality program Survivor needs to be banned and never broadcast again. Bibliography Orwell, G. (1949). Nineteen eighty-four. New York: Harcourt, Brace.
