The use of discretion in the law enforcement profession has proven to be an inevitable practice. Police officers routinely use their beliefs and judgments to make crucial decisions that include the lives and liberty of citizens in the community they serve. While discretion has both negative and positive sides, it is impossible to eliminate it from law enforcement. The best way to use discretion safely is to practice using it on and off duty as well. While practicing discretion, officers should keep their beliefs and biases to themselves and out of the line of duty. When police officers are on duty, they must be aware of what is happening around them, eliminate discriminatory factors and use trust to perform a lawful act.
