Have you ever wondered why there are Jews almost everywhere in the world? Don't you ever wonder how they got there or why they got there? More specifically, this essay will focus on Sydney, Australia. He will discuss the push and pull factors of Australia and the Australian community today. Australia is a unique country. It is one of the few countries where its founders were Jews. Furthermore, it is the country with the largest number of Holocaust survivors in the world. (Shyovitz, David) Australian Jews have existed for over two centuries and are rapidly becoming larger. In these days and even then, the majority of Jews lived in Melbourne or Sydney. There are approximately 112,000 Jews living in Australia, according to the article “Shalom Life” (Marcusa, Anthony). The history of Jews in Australia initially begins in the 18th century, when people were deported as convicts from the United Kingdom. About 8-14 of them were Jews. (Shyovitz, David) Jewish convicts in Australia began to build a Jewish community with synagogues. The first synagogue was built in Sydney. This attracted more Jews from around the world to immigrate to Australia. In the 1850s, the gold rush attracted European migrants who caused a demographic shift. Jewish immigrants engaged in commercial gold trading and setting up shops along the mining route ("Jewish Life in Australia"). During the late 19th century... mid-paper... one of the most prestigious organizations in Australia is the Zionist Federation of Australia. To summarize, Australian Jews are very supportive of Israel and have a very strong connection to Israel. In conclusion, Jewish life in Australia then and now was remarkable. Australian Jews should be proud of the community they have created and organized for future generations. From the beginning, Australia has been an extraordinary place for Jews.
