On the contrary, it should be measured by that thing, which is immortal, which makes everything available to live according to the noblest part of us, the smallest, perhaps for dimensions, but the most valuable for robustness and superior to all the others. Animals are not involved in the concept of happiness because they are deprived of this ability. Only man is happy to the extent that he is capable of carrying out such an activity of contemplation. Therefore, as contemplation extends, so does happiness extend. The right goal is a good life. There are some things we do, just to live: food, taking care of our bodies and supporting our health. Because of this, most people have to work to have money to buy food, clothing, and shelter. There are other things we do to live well. We make efforts to obtain an education, believing that knowledge beyond what is necessary enriches our lives. We don't need pleasure to survive, but they undoubtedly make our lives better. Only life and the good life have goals for which we must find the means. But simply life, or survival, is a means to living well. It is impossible to live well without staying alive as long as possible. But what purpose is a good life? There is no answer to this question, Aristotle said, because “a good life is an end in itself; we do not aspire to it for the sake of anything else”."
