“Enough,” said Fortunato, “coughing is nothing; it won't kill me. I won't die of coughing. "True... true," replied Montresor. If only Fortunato had known the irony behind this saying. Montresor, the revenge seeker in Edgar Allan Poe's “Cask of Amontillado,” will be the main subject of this writing. Montresor was bothered, in this story, by insults that pushed him to want revenge. Revenge on a taster friend of his named Fortunato. Montresor, having the family motto Nemo me impune lacessit which means 'no one attacks me with impunity', felt the need to take revenge on Fortunato for insulting him. Knowing that Fortunato is dependent on alcohol, Montresor tricks Fortunato into believing that he has Amontillado, a type of wine. Because of this, Fortunato follows Montresor into the crypts where Montresor quickly chains Fortunato in a crypt, builds a stone wall to keep him in, and leaves him there to pass through. Montresor carries out the punishment through intelligence, pride and revenge. Montresor possesses the trait of intelligence which greatly benefits him in his quest for revenge. “My dear Fortunato, luckily you met. How amazingly well you look today. But I received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts. Montresor also states: “Since you are engaged, I am going to Luchresi. If anyone has a critical breakthrough, it's him." Both quotes strongly demonstrate Montresor's intellect for multiple reasons. Montresor knows Fortunato's love for wines very well. Any wine, especially a rarer one like Amontillado, would definitely catch Fortunato's attention. Also, another example of Montresor's mass intelligence would be that he uses reverse psychology against... middle of paper......, I helped them, I surpassed them in volume and strength. I did this, and the fuss died down." Montresor at this point only had revenge on his mind. He was too involved now to turn back. He had to complete the task he so desperately wanted. Just to be left with a sliver of guilt he pushes it away as quickly as he thought about it. Therefore, Montresor can be seen to possess the traits of intelligence, pride, and revenge throughout this story. The importance behind analyzing character traits is to get into the mind and think like the character. When you understand Montresor's personality, you understand his story better. You can dig deeper into his mindset and perhaps understand his reasoning, ideas and thoughts. When you piece together Montresor's personality and begin to see from his perspective, you see nothing but vengeance, vengeance at its best..
