Parents work longer hours and, as a result, are less involved in their children's school work and spend less time with them. Parental involvement and participation is one of the key factors in a child's academic performance because it serves as a link between school and home (Basch, 2011). Parents need to be involved in their child's school events or actively engage in their child's school work. If parents devoted their extra time to work, they would decrease the time spent with their children. Furthermore, simple questions parents ask children about the types of food in a supermarket aisle can make a big difference in academic performance (Harden & Tucker, 2012). By talking and answering questions, children are able to think critically, which can help them in their future schoolwork.
