These two sports are very different, but contain some similarities. Football and soccer should be compared on their origin, rules and strategies. Football is popular all over the world. Many countries actually call football “soccer”. The game of football was first played in China, but the early Romans and Greeks also played this game. Even if what they called football was simply kicking a ball. Back then, football was a very dangerous game that had no rules. Sport as we know it today was born in England. The first rules of football were called the Cambridge rules and were created in the early 1800s. Even though these rules were created, some schools still used rugby rules which included kicking, punching, biting and measuring. In 1863 rugby rules were no longer allowed and football became closely related to what it is today. Football has also changed significantly over the years to become what the sport is today. This game was first played by the early Greeks and they called it harpaston. Harpaston was kind of a combination of rugby, soccer and football. Teams would kick, run, or throw a ball across a goal line to score. The soccer game most closely related to today's soccer came from England. In the 1800s, students began playing for... middle of paper... linebackers who stop running plays, push the quarterback, and help stop passes. There are two types of defenders which include cornerback and safety. The cornerback is responsible for covering wide receivers and tackling them if they catch the ball. Finally, there are safeties whose job it is to help cover receivers and help the line protect itself from a run. Although the offense and defense are not on the field at the same time, they ultimately work together for their team to win. Soccer and football have many similarities and differences in their origin, rules and strategy. The player's skills and determination make these sports truly exciting to watch. People from all over the world, of different ages and ethnicities, love watching these sports. To this day both soccer and football are both popular and have been throughout history.
