Starting and Running a Business While it's an intimidating prospect for most people, there are millions of entrepreneurs in the United States. Some of them turn out to be very successful, others, not so much. There are many steps to starting and running a business, but many of them can be easily completed by simply filling out a few forms and paying small fees. Businesses have existed since the beginning of barter, an apple for a little corn, a horse for a wife, a daughter for a house. (In no way reflects what I would trade) Starting businesses over time has never been easy, from the costs, to the hassles, to the threat of decapitation; there have always been obstacles in starting a business. One of the hardest parts of being an entrepreneur is starting up. This includes obtaining financing, applying for all necessary permits, and finding a building to house the business. Many business owners rent or lease, but some choose to actually purchase a location. The permits needed to start a business vary from state to state, city to city, and year to year. The type of business also affects the permits needed. For example, to start an online business, you wouldn't have to buy a building and require fewer permits than a restaurant would. Restaurants must obtain as many permits as any other business, plus they must obtain permits from the health department and be inspected regularly. Sometimes the startup cost is too high for some entrepreneurs and the business fails. This is one of the reasons why you should apply for a full business license. If you are not properly licensed as a business, banks can come after you and what you own if you fail.
