”Technology should not drive curriculum; the curriculum should drive the technology,” says Angers (2004). You may be wondering what this means. Simply put, it means that the curriculum should dictate how technology will be used in the classroom. The purpose of this article is to explain how to integrate technology into the curriculum and the effects of technology on curriculum design. To add technology to the curriculum, the technology must be available for use. To be available for use, the technology must be placed in the classroom by someone, who is usually someone from the Information Technology (IT) industry. Therefore, collaboration with IT will be necessary when implementing technology into the curriculum. However, before IT gets involved, the equipment, software or hardware must be available. Rocky Point Union Free School District (2011) indicates that they will maintain their lease with said company to ensure they have the most up to date equipment/computers. The computers will be updated every five years. However, software updates will be performed quarterly or as deemed necessary. Therefore, you will need to communicate with other departments to ensure that technology has been appropriately included in the curriculum. Farmington Public Schools (2012) indicated that its district will employ two types of specialists to facilitate technology integration. The first employee will be an educational technology (ITS) specialist at the school level. ITS is responsible for integrating technology throughout the district. The ITS is also responsible for assisting teachers in the transformation process. While the media specialist will be responsible for managing the technology on...... middle of paper ...... technology has both advantages and disadvantages. However, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. With this in mind, the curriculum department must embrace this great task and let technology carry us forward. Works Cited Angers, J. (2004).
