He brought the culture of ballet with him to Paris. Paris eventually became the ballet capital of the world. Until 1681 all female roles in the ballet were played by men. Many people fell in love with ballet. George Balanchine brought ballet to America. Pointe shoes are special shoes that women wear for dancing on tiptoe. The toe of the shoe, called the box, is made of dense layers of papier-mâché, fabric or cardboard. It must be very sturdy, because the dancer will put all her weight on it. The sole of the shoe, or the upper, is made of leather cardboard or red cardboard, it is important that it is sturdy, because it supports the ankles.
