The topics of the first video clip were reading and decoding. This man talked about how many first graders get confused with inversions, such as: b, p, d and q. I remember when I was in elementary school, I would always mess up my B's and D's while writing, and I still find myself messing them up sometimes while reading or listening to my students read the answers while I tutor. in Huntington. He talks about how before entering school we learned that spatial orientation doesn't change an object, and he demonstrates this concept by positioning a clock in different ways, but in the end it's still a clock. He says once school starts, perception now matters. It also talks about how we, as teachers, shouldn't say something is easy, when a student clearly doesn't understand it and can't do it, because it's not easy for them, and that's how class clowns develop in the classroom, because they do not receive the material and the teacher does not facilitate anything to help them understand. He also says not to use rhetorical questions because this only hurts feelings, and is intimidating because there is no “correct” answer; instead, it is simply a weapon that teachers use against students to shut down lines of communication. The main point I took away from this particular video is that teachers need to know that some of their students might be able to read the text, but they won't remember anything they read, because they spent all their energy decoding it, instead of taking note. the main idea, characters, plot, etc. In the video on reading comprehension, this man pointed out that most teachers teach comprehension through vocabulary, and then assume that their students will understand... half the paper... ...one that needs the CPR and it would save her life. It is sad that this is the example that must be set for teachers to understand the concept of equity in their classrooms. Seeing as this is the fourth time I've seen this video in an education class, it's hard to write about my initial reaction. I think this is an excellent video and I think anyone who wants to be involved in a student's education should watch the full video. It provides in-depth information about how students with disabilities feel in the classroom and why what some teachers do in their classrooms doesn't work. I really like this video because it is so simple, however understanding students with learning disabilities is such a difficult concept for many people to grasp, they don't know exactly what it means or how to handle the situation.
