Topic > Compare and Contrast Views of Slavery

Most white settlers during this time period were slave owners, but surprisingly Henry was in favor of abolishing slavery. Ironically, it was not in Henry's best interest to oppose slavery so much that he would lose his slaves that he owned. “I'm drawn to the general discomfort of living without them. I won't, I can't justify it..." This passage shows the inconsistency in Henry's personal feelings regarding slavery, saying right before this passage that he fully supports the Quaker movement to abolish slavery, but will not be bothered to lose the his slaves for the work he has done. He continues to say that the best and most appropriate time will come to abolish it
