Topic > Are Genetically Modified Organisms Safe - 1945

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have become a topic of great interest in the media nowadays. GMOs are defined as an organism whose genetic structure has been altered by incorporating a gene that will express a desirable trait (Dresbach et. al 2013). Often these selected traits are beneficial to the consumer or producer. Currently, GMOs are being created at a higher rate than ever before and are being used in the foods we eat. This has created widespread debate locally, nationally and internationally about the safety of genetically modified foods for human health. There are many points of view that have been taken by different groups on this issue. Some believe it is harmful to our health, and one source states that “mice that ate GMO corn had fewer and smaller pups (Jagelio 2013).” Without testing on humans, how do we know that these harmful effects do not affect our health and reproduction? Other groups believe that GMOs are beneficial and have no impact on human health. These individuals state that: “Since GMOs were introduced into the food supply nearly 20 years ago, there has not been a documented case of any health problem in humans, not even a cold, linked to GMOs (Entine 2013) ." They also found that GMOs are beneficial to human health. Dresbach et. al(2013) found: “Gene splicing biotechnology offers the opportunity to create plants that will produce more nutrient-dense food.” With so many different viewpoints all citing different information about the impact of GMOs on human well-being, the question remains: How do GMOs affect human health? In order to develop genetic modification, there have been advances in emerging technologies... halfway through ......ogmo4michigan.org/Tomala, l. (2013, May 4).
