Fantasy and magical realism in the violinViolin is a novel by Anne Rice. The genre of the book is fantasy and the text allows many comparisons between fantasy and magical realism. I felt there were a lot of great elements to this book. An example of a fantastic element is when Tirana was lying in bed with Karl after his death. He kept it in his house for about four days after his death because he didn't want the funeral home to burn it; she wanted to be with him forever (8). I feel like this is more awesome because I can't see anyone holding someone after they've died. Just the smell would make me want to throw the body out. Another fantasy element was when she kissed him as if he were alive. (10). I don't think anyone can kiss a dead person if he doesn't kiss back. I feel like these are all things we would never do and this would never happen. Wendy B. Faris quotes: "Magical realism combines realism and fantasy in such a way that magical elements grow organically from the reality depicted" (163) . I saw this aspect a lot in this book. Fantastic elements combined with elements of realism to bring out magical elements. Some examples were when Triana held Karl as if he were still alive. I wanted to think he was still alive because she kept him so long after he died. Personally I didn't find many realistic elements. Most of the elements of realism were when the author described a character or the setting in which it took place. The elements I came across were at the beginning of the book when the author described the violinist. He was tall and thin, but not unattractively so. She had black hair with braids...... center of paper ......on imagery in Latin America: self-affirmation and resistance to metropolitan paradigms." Magical realism: theory, history, community.
